Behavioral Training helps with poor reading skills
A study published by Medical News TODAY states Connectivity And Function In The Brain Improved By Behavioral Training. This particular study focused on children with poor reading skills that improved after a six month period of intense behavioral training. Although, there have been other studies showing improvement in behavior followed by behavioral training, what's exceptionally thrilling about this news is that after the training, they were actually able to detect brain connectivity and enhanced brain function with a technology called Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI). It's really a very interesting article that only further supports the benefits of behavioral training with children.

Take time for yourself and for your significant other
When you are constantly busy and doing things for other people, you may ultimately neglect an extremely important person - yourself. In order to give your children, your spouse, and even to your job, everything you can, you have to also be taking care of yourself. This includes taking time to exercise, relax, and even pamper you once in awhile. This also means making time to spend with same sex friends, an activity I view as essential in everyone's life.
Taking care of yourself is not selfish, but actually a form of self love. How are you going to dedicate yourself to your children and spouse if you are running on empty because you haven't stopped to fill your own gas tank? It is also critical to make time for your spouse or significant other as well. Children thrive on an environment where the family unit as a whole is healthy. I once heard someone say (I think it was on TV actually) that the best thing you can do for your child is love his or her father or mother.
This really makes so much sense, especially with the divorce rate being so high these days. Children often get put first ahead of spouses and this can mess with the intended order of nature. By showing that you take care of yourself and that you are taking care of your relationships, you are setting a good example for your child in his or her future relationships with others.
So, put your feet up, take a bath, or get lunch with friends. I know how you can easily say to yourself, if I just got this done and if I just got that done, then I could relax. Well, the truth is, there will always be something to be done. So, take a deep breath, forget about it, and have some fun! You can always do it tomorrow.

Sometimes you just gotta laugh
When you are raising children, a sense of humor is essential in making it through to the next day. Although there are many frustrating things about tantrums and less than desirable behavior, sometimes you just gotta laugh. It helps to maintain a perspective that is fresh and relieves stress.
Just recently my 3 year old son woke me up around 6 a.m. to inform me that his small lightning McQueen car was in the toilet. When looking into the toilet, all I could see was a big pile of you know what. I asked where the car was at and he informed me that it was underneath the big pile. As I obviously preferred not to be fishing a car out from underneath a pile of poop at 6 a.m., sometimes you just gotta laugh.
So the next time your child has drawn all over the wall, made a mess or put a toy in the toilet right before going, take a step back and relax. It happens to all parents, but it's the ones that maintain a sense of humor that are able to stay calm and prevent frustration from building up to an angry outburst.

TV Censorship
The television programs children watch and the video games or computer games children play are an extremely influential part of their behavior. Some parents don't realize the effect this can have on how your child behaves. One child I was working with would restate comments he had heard on a cartoon at school. He got in trouble for saying, during recess, "I'm going to kill you!" while chasing another child. This was a comment that he had heard on a cartoon that was supposed to be appropriate for his age.
By human nature we tend to say and do things that we see on a regular basis, regardless of whether we may consciously decide not to do something. Have you ever had a friend with an accent? Noticed that you started speaking with the accent after spending considerable time with that person? It's not that you made a conscious choice saying, "I'm going to talk just like her!" We just tend to imitate those we are around, especially if we really like that person. Therefore, computer games, web sites, video games, television shows and individuals your child spends time with should be good role models.
Pay attention to the TV show and video game rating scales. They are a key indicator as to whether it is appropriate. Watch the show or play the game yourself, paying attention to whether you are okay with your child imitating anything that is seen. Watch what your child is doing on the internet. Do not allow your child to have a TV or computer in his or her room, unless you are able to 100% control what they are watching and doing.
